Round 2, National MTB race Adelaide wrap-up by KOM team rider Aiden Lefmann

MTB National championships – The race where everyone wants to impress, and the race that everyone seems to target as a season goal. Its not just another race, as this one carries the prestige of national titles, and the green and gold jerseys.

My expectations were pretty straight forward. Top ten satisfied, top 5 happy, top 3 stoked! Pretty simple goals, but relatively realistic to the amount of training and my condition leading into it. So off we went with another crazy start, but this time instead of leading off the front, i found myself caught in a crash, just 200m off the start line. Straight away, im into chase mode and find myself doing a lot of dirty and somewhat risky passing manouvers to get myself back in contention. Lap by lap, i moved through the field and felt pretty good, although not knowing where i actually was placed.

On lap 4 of 6, i flatted at the base of the final climb, which was unlucky to some degree, but also lucky as it was less than a kilometre to the tech zone, where our spare wheels awaited us. A quick change meant i didn’t loose any more than 20-30seconds, but i loss contact with the pace group i was with.

Riding solo for two laps, I progressed further more making up a couple of places but was starting to fade as the 6th and final lap was hurting! 2km from the finish i was joined by Dylan Cooper, and a fast approaching Sean Lewis, but somehow managed to hold them off to come in 6th across the line, and 5th in Elite men. So i was happy with that, and can happily claim that my flat tire, was the very very first racing flat i have ever had with Maxxis’s LUST crossmark tires, which is pretty good, as i’ve been using them for over 6 years. Happy days, now back to reality! Aido”

Round 1, National MTB race Tasmania wrap-up by KOM team rider Aiden Lefmann

First round of the national series is always pretty interesting, and without a lot of racing in the legs for most of the elite riders, it was always going to be a battle of early season form! For me, a strong start put me in the lead for most of the first half of the race, before the hills got the better of me, and my legs decided that the fast start was a bad idea! I slowly moved back through the field to eventually finish in 9th in Elite men. I was satisfied that the form is there, but i think some kays over the chrissy break may lead to a little more endurance for next time round.... Nationals here we come!

KOM team rider Andy Blair tackles "Tour of Bright stage race 2009"

Report: The first weekend in December each year sees the running of the Tour of Bright stage race. It is a great tour taking in some terrific riding in the Victorian high country and is always good training for the upcoming mountain bike season.

The first stage was the "gaps loop", a 150km road stage over Rosewhite Gap, up to Bogong village and then over Tawonga Gap back to Bright....a solid day out. As predicted the early break got away in the first kilometres, and a couple of others snuck away on the other side of Rosewhite. I wasnt keen to do get away myself, as it was a long way from the finish and most of the guys that I thought were worth marking, were still in the peloton. Unfortunately it seemed that these guys must have all had teammates in the breaks because the atmoshpere soon turned negative and no one was keen to do any work. It was so slow at one stage in fact, that when i decided to take a wee, I actually gapped to bunch while freewheeling down a hill with my willy out! Rather annoyed by this obvious indication that the peloton was creeping, I just decided to keep going on my own. I rode the 10kms into Mt Beauty solo and all the way up to the Cranky Charley hairpin (about 5km of climbing) before they caught me. The group then stayed more or less together until the bottom of Tawonga Gap when it all blew apart. I wasnt feeling great by this stage so I was happy to find my buddy, Adrian Jackson, to pace me over the top. We ended up finishing in a group of 8, a rather unimpressive 16 minutes off the pace.

The 16km time trial that afternoon was a pretty tall order. I didnt really give it a good crack and lost a bit more time, but my thoughts were already on Sundays final stage up Mt Hotham.

The 3rd and final stage would take us from Bright, up the valley road to Harrietville, and then up the formidable ascent of Mt Hotham to a mountain top finish. The stage is only 58km, but it is tough with the big climb lasting for about 30kms. The pace on the flat valley roads was fast and despite being worried that a split in the bunch could result in big time losses, I found myself sitting in the back of the bunch for most of the time. As soon as we hit the climb, Lachy Norris launched one off the front. I dont think anyone even thought about going with him because he was moving so fast that he had disappeared out of sight after only a couple of corners and wasnt caught until very late in the stage. For me, I just tried to settle into a rhythm. I didnt quite feel comfortable but I tried to position myself near the front for the first big test, "the Meg", a 400m section of 9% at 5km into the climb. The bunch often splits here so by moving up a little I gave my self a bit of a buffer to getting dropped. It worked pretty well because despite dropping back quite a lot and a gap forming in front of me, I was able to regain contact and stay with the main group all the way to the tree line....all be it somewhat a yo-yo dangling off the back. When I was unloaded with about 10kms to go I tried to keep pushing. By the summit I had lost about 4 minutes to the winner, but i was pretty happy with my sensations and my position of 28th on the stage.

Overall it was a nice weekend in the mountains with great weather and some solid racing. I am feeling good about where I am at for this time of year and I am certainly looking forward to the 1st round of the National Mountain Bike Series next weekend in Hobart. Big thanks to the KOM crew for their support.SUP!

King of the Mountain Cyclery is proud to be a sponsor of the Chris Knox Racing Team Ducati

Chris Knox is a well know character within the cycling community both leg and petrol powered, and this year KOM has had the pleasure of sponsoring Chris and his Ducati 1198R in his first season in the Australian Super Bike Championship. Chris has had some amazing results and similar amazing crashes, the last at Phillip Island prior to the Australian Moto GP (won by the Aussie legend, Casey) spectators saw "the KOM logo flying through the air at 200kmph"!! Not exactly what we had planned, but heck it looked good and gave real cred to the phrase "air time".

Cyclists Start Grueling Tour de Timor

Cyclists from about 10 countries are competing in the first ever Tour de Timor, a five-day bicycle race across the Southeast Asian island nation of East Timor. The tour is being held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of East Timor's vote for independence from Indonesia. The president of East Timor, José Ramos-Horta, attended the opening of the inaugural Tour De Timor, a 350-kilometer bicycle race across his island nation.

"We hope that everybody arrives intact, no broken arm or leg, or no bruises, no dehydration, and that everybody will be a winner in this race for peace," said Mr. Ramos-Horta. "That is the theme of this Tour De Timor."

The president hopes the race will showcase the progress East Timor has made to build peace and security in the decade since it voted for independence from Indonesia.

KOM is being represented by Wazza the MTB jedi knight (who as of Tuesday the 25th was in 10th position) Duncan Markham and Daniel Wright.

KOM is proud to welcome Aussie superstar MTB rider- Andy Bliar under the KOM umbrella of riders we support.

Andy has been racing mountain bikes for over 15 years. He was one of Australia's top junior riders and represented Australia at several junior and U23 world championships, until he was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. It took him several years to recover, during which he found time for various other achievements, ranging from winning the university medal for his mechanical engineering degree to climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland.

After several years off the bike, and with his Coeliac disease under control (due to a strictly gluten-free diet), Andy has begun his comeback to elite mountain biking. Although initially riding "just for fun", Andy enjoyed considerable success in his first couple of seasons back. His achievements last season included 8th place overall in the XC national series, and 3rd place at the Thredbo national round.

This year, Andy has quit his day job in order to race the first 6 World Cups, with the aim of getting selected on the Australian team for the World Championships to be held in Canberra this year.

Andy is a friendly and popular rider and his love of the sport really comes through in his attitude to racing; he is always having fun and it is very rare that he doesn’t have a smile on his face. His involvement in mountain biking at club and national level is increasing. He is the XC rider representative for MTBA, which makes him the channel through which communications between XC riders and the MTBA executive. He has also recently begun writing articles for various publications, including Australian Coeliac Magazine and Enduro Magazine. KOM is proud to have Andy as a member of our team.

You can read all about Andy in his blog link below.

MTB World Cup Cross Country #5 & Downhill & Four cross #6 - 2009, Mont-Saint-Anne, Quebec, Canada, CDM (World Cup)

KOM Team rider Zoe King finished in 46th position in this weekends round of the World Cup in Mont-Saint-Anne, Quebec, Canada. Zoe broke her handle bar and brake shifter in the first lap, forcing her to limp back to the tech zone where luckily Aussie Rob Eva (SRAM maestro) quickly replaced the bar and shifter enabling her to re-join the race.

Zoe then quickly worked her way back through the field, but ran out of time to get the KOM jersey on the podium. Zoe said she felt "really strong and was looking foward to the World Champs in Canberra next month".

Posted by Rosemary Barnes: The women's race was interesting, particulary for Zoe King, who is pictured below with Rob Eva working some magic on her bike in the feed zone. A couple of laps into the race, Rob ran up to Neil Ross in the feed zone, and told him that Zoe had smashed her brake lever off her handlebar completely. Wasting no time, Rob had an entire front brake assembly off a spare Disco Tas team bike, ready for when Zoe rode into the feed zone with one hand on the handlebars and the other one trying to stop her front brake falling into her wheel! In less than 3 minutes, Rob and Neil had Zoe's brake off and the new one on, and off Zoe went to catch back the places she'd lost whilst brake-less. All in a day's work for Mr. SRAM Australia, I suppose. Not bad!!- (thanks for that blog Rosemary Branes)

KING OF THE MOUNTIAN CYCLERY is now the official distributor for LIGHTWEIGHT carbon wheels for SYDNEY!!

KOM is proud to announce that we are the official distributor for Lightweight Carbon wheels for Sydney.Lightweight wheels are 100% handmade in Germany with their quality and reliability setting them way above their competitors. They take the all-carbon wheel in a direction no other wheel manufacturer has gone. Lightweight laminate the carbon/kevlar spokes directly into the hub and rim, and all wheels are equipped with a memory chip. These chips store data tracking each wheel’s manufacturing history, including serial number and production data. The chips weigh only 0.2g and can facilitate top level service. With all this in mind these wheels have become a must-have wheelset of the professional peloton and riders personally purchasing a set, at full retail price, for themselves to use in specific stages of all the big tours.

Drop on in and talk to Dave or Wazza about these amazing Lightweight wheels!

Offenburg UCI MTB XC World Cup 2009

The second round of the World Cup was held in Offenburg, Germany last Sunday. There were around 230 men on the start list and 100 women. The course is one of my favourites as it flows really nicely and has lots of technical drops. The crowd is always huge and they make so much noise every time someone does the drop. This year KOM had some extra Aussie supporters, Claire and Paul from Canberra. They brought with them Skippy – an inflatable kangaroo. Skippy was dressed in a KOM vest and sat on Claire’s shoulders – visible above the crowd. It was awesome! See picture below.

The technical highlights of the race include:

  • Dual Speed – choice of two lines down a steep descent over log steps
  • North Shore – series of flowing switch backs finishing with a really steep rooty drop
  • World Class Drop – a super steep roller (where you feel like you are on the front wheel the whole way down)
  • Wolfs Drop – a moderately steep but really rooty drop with a sharp turn at the end
  • Snake Pit – a wide section covered in roots and deep ruts, with lots of different lines

There was a huge Aussie contingent of racers this year. There were 5 junior men and 3 junior women from Australia who raced on the Saturday. I was super impressed that they could all ride all of the technical sections. They all raced really well and had respectable results. Sunday saw 6 Aussie women and 7 Aussie men in the Elite race. Chris Jongewaard had his best European result ever finishing 13th and Row Fry had the best Australian women’s result in a long time finishing in 19th. AWESOME!!

My own race was not very good at all, finishing 70th, but the course is so fun, I still managed to enjoy it.

We are now at Houffalize in Belgium – the course is full of real slippery European mud. Wazza will also be racing on Saturday in a citizen’s race which has over 350 riders.

ROUND 3 National MTB XC SERIES Geelong Victoria

3rd round National MTB xc series Geelong Victoria- race report by KOM TEAM RIDER -Aiden Lefmann. Ah yes kids, just another bike race out of the way, and three days later, im still removing chunks of dirt from many regions around my slowly recovered body. The 3rd round of the national mtb xc series took us to the not-so-sunny Geelong, down in Victoria.

With a lot of overnight rain, and very cool conditions, it was pretty much inevitable that a muddy race was on the cards. A wickedly fun, technical yet sandy course maintained its condition fairly well despite the atrocious conditions, and was just awesome to ride with its many timber berms (covered in chicken wire) and purpose built rock gardens to keep the concentration levels high. As for the race, well being pleasantly surprise with my front row grid position after the last rounds chain failure, I was guaranteed to get a decent start, and off into the mud pit we went.

Chris jungle-blood headed the field and quickly began stamping his authority in the soaked soil by creating a quick 10 second lead only minutes off the start as I led the chasing group. The race unfolded from there basically with not too much change at the head of the field from then on. Thankfully my Canno Taurine hardtail maintained its ability to pedal and I managed to hold off a strong chasing group to come in second, three minutes down from the green and gold winner, in what was one of the biggest fields seen at the national series to date.

Thank you to Geelong for putting on such crap weather, thanks to Brisbane for been just so awesome and many thanks to all of the following people or names that make this a truly enjoyable sport. King of the Mountain, Cannondale, SRAM, Maxxis , RLC Sport, Oakley, Ridley Williams Kirk design, SERFAS, Anna B Racing, and of course little mondo.

KOM rider Zoe King Bundesliga MTB Race, Munsingen, Germany

Last Sunday I raced the Bundesliga MTB Race in Munisngen in Germany. This race was considered a “warm up” race before doing the world cups. Warren raced on the Saturday in a 44km Marathon in the coldest and mudiest of days. It really looked miserable. He rode with an under shirt, jersey, arm and knee warmers, KOM vest and rain jacket the whole race – and he used to be a POM! This is what Waz had to say.

“My 44km marathon in Munsingen was more like a short-track/road/xc paced and tactics race. They went off so fast and I ended up 1hr46min 34th out of 370ish. I had to use every trick in my arsenal to hang on to the group of 5 riders I spent the race battling with. I have not ridden in such filthy conditions in 15 years. The last 2 km was the most technical and this was where I made a move on the bunch I was with. I dropped them as bodys were flailing all over the steep root strewn slopes and managed to get up another 5 places on the final approach. My Cannondale Taurine was amazing and the white lightening chain lube probably worked the best of any lube system on the day given the very tuff circumstances”

I rode the cross country course a few days prior and it was quite fun but a little tame. Once it got a bit wet though it got so slippery and a lot more challenging. I wasn\’t really looking forward to being frozen cold but was hoping it would be muddy, as we don\’t often get the chance to race in mud in Australia. The morning of the race it was clear skies and a few degrees warmer. The course had dried considerably. We were called up to the start grid and I was on the back row. I was a little perplexed as everyone had their first name on their race numbers, yet I had my surname “King”. Katherine was called up in 8th position, yet I had more UCI points than her yet was ranked 32nd. I didn’t realise until later, that they must not have been able to find my UCI points as would have searched under my first name not surname! Oh well, there wasnt much I could about it on the start line, and the race really was a practice run anyway. Neil Ross, my coach only wanted me to race at 80-90% and not get to caught up in what was happening around me.

The race started and about 100m from the start line was a nasty steep grassy pinch, totally rideable but hurt the lungs. Typically, someone couldn\’t ride it and got off their bike, which meant there was a flow on effect of people getting off their bikes. Being stuck at the back I got caught up in it. I thought I had found a gap to sneak through when a girl in front veered sharply into my path. I had to jump off and my knicks got caught on the saddle – a stylish dismount! I had to run up the rest of the climb. The course then hit a section of tarmac road where the Euros put the power down. Then it was into single track.

6 laps of a 4.8km loop with a fair few climbs which were short but taxing. A few technical rooty sections and finishing in a circuit of rock gardens and rollers inside an oval.

The first race after travel, is always a bit of a shock to the system. The cool air really made it a lung buster. I am glad to have got it out of the way, and I\’m now preparing for the world cup in Offenburg with its technical course and huge crowds. Its one of my favourites and I’m really looking forward to it.Big Thanks to our sponsors, MAXXIS, CANNONDALE, SERFAS, Ridley Williams Kirk design, and KOM for making this possible.

Terra Australis Race Report – Great Southern Land Mountain Bike Epic

Race report from KOM riders - Zoe and Waz.

We have just returned from the Terra Australis MTB Epic, a 7-day stage race through Victorias high country. We raced as a Mixed Team of 2 and ended up winning our category and finishing 4th overall in the general classification. The days were long, with lots of tough climbing (over 15,000 plus metres all up), but the descents were awesome and the views spectacular (so I am told as I mainly saw Warrens rear end, constantly trying to keep on his wheel…). We covered 577kms over the 7 days in 31hrs & 39mins. A good week of training in preparation for Europe!

The Cannondale Scalpels were the PERFECT bike for the race, and ours worked like a dream. I could flick off the suspension for the climbing and back on for the rocky descents, allowing a quicker and more comfortable ride. We had no mechanicals (thanks to SRAM), and only one puncture. Most teams had a fair few mechanicals (lots of sticks & rocks getting caught in derailleurs) and loads of punctures. Our Maxxis tubeless tyres were also perfect for the race conditions.

Day One started at Falls Creek and finished at Mt Beauty, 93km later. This day was a killer, gaining 2550 metres in elevation. The long climb was one of the toughest I’ve done, every time we thought we were at the top it would switchback and keep climbing. The heat and sun were harsh and we had run out of water, then to top it off, it ended up being a fair few kms longer than expected. 5hrs16mins for the day. I was definitely nervous about the week ahead… A good feed, stretch and sleep helped life the spirits.

Day two went from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain – another cute alpine village. We were expecting another tough day with 2112 metres of climbing – all in the last 40km. While it was hard, it didn’t seem quite as bad as the first day. The terrain was varied which kept things interesting. The fire trails were surrounded by snow gum trees and we passed through some cool old sheep and cattle stations. The descents were quick but lots of big sticks and rocks – Waz punctured about 50 metres from the base of the descent! The total distance 102km, in just under 6hrs. We stuffed ourselves silly with a great dinner at Rundells.

Day three was from Dinner Plain to Bright. The course profile looked great – an elevation gain of 1219 metres and loss of 2479 metres, we were all looking forward to an “easier” day. Despite expectations, I really struggled this day. We had a crap night sleep - an office alarm behind our apartment was going all night & my tummy was a bit funny. The start of the ride climbed up to Mt Hotham, great views of the mountains. Waz took loads of photos while I plodded along. Followed a beautiful river for ages then hit some single track before the finish at Bright. 75km, 3hr 23min. We had a much needed massage then hit the local ice creamery.

Day four started and finished in Bright, circumnavigating Mt Buffalo. This was the longest stage with the most climbing – over 3200metres! We had been dreading this day all week. Luckily the legs were feeling revitalised after the massage. We rode with Dean and Katherine from Torq the whole day which was fun and made the day go a lot quicker. There were 3 big climbs with the main one climbing 12km up to Buffalo gap. Again, we had some awesome views. After over an hour of climbing we were looking forward to the descent – which was fun but only lasted about 10mins! Ripped off! Some nice flowing single track at the end of the day meant we finished the day with big smiles. Total distance was 116.7km in 6hrs 41min.

Day five – the course profile certainly didnt look easy. Another 79km gaining & losing 2300metres. It started with a 10km climb out of Bright, then through Harrietville and Wandiligong, then back to Bright. The pace was on from the start, and I knew it was going to be a long day. Some undulating riding along a ridge, then into the pine plantation, then some more flowing single track which was fun but I just wanted to be home and could of do without the extra 5kms. Think Waz found it easy again and could have done a second lap. Bloody greyhound! Quote of the day came from Waz. After telling him I couldn’t sustain the pace early on he said “what do you want me to do about it?” Um, SLOW DOWN!!! The original course apparently had loads more singletrack but unfortunately got burnt by the fires. We will have to come back next year! After a drive to the quaint town of Beechworth, we ate their bakery dry.

Day six from Beechworth to Yackandandah and back to Beechworth. The end of the race was in sight and 52km sounded like a walk in the park. We again started like it was cross country race. It took about 15km until Dean, from team Torq triplets, called a truce – we were in different categories, so what on earth were we doing! We all decided to just enjoy it. Katherine needed fresh legs for South Africa, and I was only meant to be going 80% , so we were relieved when the boys relaxed the pace a bit. We rode some cool single track dropping 150 metres in 1.5kms – lots of lose soft dirt – very different to Sydney sandstone riding. There where a few steep pinches but nothing in comparison to the previous days. 2hrs 23min for the day meant we had time to explore the town – the local micro brewery was a hit. Even found a decent coffee. A few drinks to celebrate only one day left. One team entertained the Beechworth Ghost Tours with the naked ghost riding along covered in white sheet with a bicycle helmet on…

Day seven was agreed by racers to be a neutral day where everyone rode together. What a great way to finish the week. Mingling with other teams and hearing their stories was great. All the competitors had glass of champagne and chocolate cake at the feed station to celebrate the journey. Everyone rolled across the finish line as one big happy family. 58km in a very cruisy 3hr 20min. The final race banquet and presentations kicked off at the appropriately named “Tread” restaurant. The camaraderie and friendships formed over the week were fantastic. The event organisation was superb, the riding tough but varied and interesting. We had a great time and will definitely be putting it into the race calendar for next year.

Thanks to KOM Cyclery, Cannondale, SRAM & Maxxis for their awesome support.

Mountains to Beach MTB stage race Sunday 1st of March to Friday 6th March 2009 race report.

Day 1, stage 1. Monday 2nd of March saw 190 riders race from Thredbo top station to the finish at the Valley Terminal. The race format was a time trial with one rider starting every 20 seconds. Team KOM featuring Wazza, Heather, Jason, and DC The course was not for the fainthearted and a mix of access trails, sweet singletrack and loose downhill switchbacks. Wazza got the fastest KOM time clocking 74.9kmh while DC was breathing down his neck at 74.5kmh (not bad for two skinny blokes on hard tails), Heather picked up third in open womens and Jason (newby to MTB racing, but Fabian Canceraro on a road bike) was left pondering his choice of new disciplines as it was "bloody terrifying". (stage 2 was a neutral transition)

Day 1, stage 3, Short track stage racing on a purpose built MTB track surrounding the beautiful Lake Crackenback resort. Must admit, it was bloody hard racing in the afternoon after we had settled into our 5 star diggs at Crackenback and killed a few hours tooling on our bikes, but come 3pm the race started in a "mass start" format which makes for very aggressive riding as everybody hustles for the best position into the single track, with Dennis Van Mill taking out the stage, and our good mate Andrew Blair taking 2nd place. (stage 4 was a neutral transition)

Day 2, stage 5, 60km stage race from Blue Cow ski resort to the Eucumbene river via Guthega village. The stage started in freezing winds and light rain at the top of the ski tube and had in excess of 2000mtr of climbing combined with traversing across the Snowy Plains, (home of the Aussie brumbies) and ascending "the Climb of no regrets". A very, very tough stage breaking the spirits (and bikes) of even the toughest competitors. To make matters worse, the final 20 odd km of neutral transition stage 6 to our overnight accommodation at Buckenderra Resort again saw us climb an additional 358mtr just to finish you off! Brett Anderson won the stage and Wazza came a very strong 6th place. The stage also saw solo female KOM rider Heather Evans climb from third place to Second place with the retirement of Rose Barnes.

Day 3 stage 7. To mix things up a bit, the organisers decided to run the stage in the dark (wind, rain and cold), so under lights we mass started at 5:00am. Very fast racing saw us do two laps around Lake Buckenderra. DC tried his hand (unsuccessfully) at "night vision" goggles loosing all his lighting within 5km of the start and having to blindly follow other riders rear tail lights for the entire race. (stage 8 was a neutral transition)

Day 4 stage 9. Try racing off road basically from Cooma to Bermagui on the south coast in one day, throw in some 2237m of climbing, a 700mtr descent down Conway Gap, traversing magnificent ridge lines, and to finish things off a 300mtr climb to the finish line...you get the idea, basically another typical day in the office for team KOM! Wazza came in strong in 9th, 2mins 44sec behind Andy Blair the stage winner. DC was assigned the super domestique role to ensure Heather maintained her 2nd position and Jason (who had previously never ridden more than two laps of Manly dam on a MTB) made sure the three amigos stayed away from the bunch. (stage 10 was a neutral transition)

Day 5 stage 11. As is customary, (well at least "customary" for the KOM crew) on the last night of a big stage race to celebrate one of the teams podium placing and to thank the fantastic job done by our support crew, Fiona (DCs wife) and Blair (Heathers husband), we enjoyed the atmosphere of the local Bermaguie pub and the temperature of the James Squire on tap...a little too much. The stage started with two laps of the fantastic Bermagui MTB park, where the "energizer bunny" aka Wazza and DC were in their element, then along the coast, across sandy dunes onto beaches, and a race along the beach at Narooma to the finish. In a cruel twist of fate, our mate Andy Blair bloke his frame on the final stage (we reminded him more than once that if was riding for KOM this never would have happened...stay tuned...) being beaten by Jason English by 20 seconds.

KOM would like to thank the organisers Huw Kingston from Wild horizons for staging the event, our sponsors, Cannondale Australia, Endura, MAXXIS tyres, RWKdesign, Blair Martin "the body mechanic"and his faithfull sidekick Jessica, Fiona Cottee for taking care of all our transport, accomodation, food and general creature comforts requirements and major props to KOM rider Heather Evans (no relations to gay levers) for placing 2nd overall in solo womens.

Increased aggression from motorists -WARNING TO ALL RIDERS
Tonight on the "A Current Affair" show, they will be running a story about "cycling anarchy on our roads" - showing the usual old archived footage of stupid cyclists running red lights etc..

Please be aware to expect increased motorist aggression towards cyclists as a result of this negative publicity for the next week or so.(its amazing how they NEVER run stories on the benefits to your health and the public health care system that cycling can bring......ignorant fools)

So, do not respond to shouts our negative gestures, simply remember to obey all road rules and enjoy the freedom that cycling brings.

We are not officially closing the bike trail after rain this time however this email is a quick reminder for riders to keep of the Manly Dam bike trail for a least a few days after rain. We received over 60mm of rain on the weekend, which is enough to result in the track becoming water logged in places.

If we receive the rain forecast for the next couple of days, we will do an assessment later in the week and will advise you if the trail needs to be closed.

The track dries out quickly and the amount of trail damage is dramatically reduced if riders stick to this wet weather rule.

Thanks again for your cooperation

Jetblack Sydney 24hour MTB race 14th 15th February -Wisemans Ferry -Sydney 2009.

RACING HEROES Jason English narrowly won the Male Solo category with 27 final laps, however, not without respectable pressure from Team KOM rider Alex Malone who came in second with 26 laps.

With Scott Wines claiming the third spot in Solo Male, the 40+ Solo Racer John Evans was truly “unstoppable”. With a lead of 13 laps to second-placed Rod Beard he went out for a last lap, right before the race finish, clocking in 23 total laps! Craig Smith was third in the 40+ category.

Overall, the Team from KOM mixed 6 team “collected” most laps – 32 laps in total. It should also be mentioned that the fastest laps where completed by members of the KOM team – Andrew East locked away both fastest male day lap with 22:01 min and Team KOM rider Zoe King was ahead of the ladies with 25:35 min – both for day and night laps.

RACE STATISTICS

Here are some statistics that make this race all the more memorable:

  • 1,317 laps completed by 268 riders in 79 teams
  • 10,536 kms raced in total
  • 22 min 1 sec – fastest day lap by Andrew East (Team KOM mixed 6)
  • 25 min 35 sec – fastest day lap by Zoe King (Team KOM mixed 6).

Big thanks to Wazza for keeping the team KOM bikes running throught the entire event, and congrats to Timmee, Tricky and the other KOM boys for a fantastic result

"King conquers" fourth National MTB Series round today in Mt Buller in Victoria

Zoe King from team KOM in Sydney NSW won her first race of the national season after sitting behind national champion, Rowena Fry from Tasmania, early in the four lap race. King pounced on Fry on the second last climb and gained a minute on Fry to secure a victory.

"Feels great , it's a really long day out in the heat and two hours is a long race anyway and just to be in these temperature s it was hard work. I certainly went out conservatively and tried to stay strong," explaned King.

The heat took its toll with the women riding longer than officials expected stretching it to a 2 hour 4.47 min time for top finisher, King.

“It was just important to save yourself in this heat,” said King.

Thanks also to our sponsors, CANNONDALE, MAXXIS, OAKLEY, ENDURA, KOM and SRAM for their support.

2009 MTBA Australian MTB Championships Canberra January 26th

9 KOM riders (including Aido and Anna from KOM QLD) made there way down to Canberra for the 2009 Australian MTB Championships. For some it would be there 1st time, while others were defending their title. The cross-country course has been designed with running World Cup events in mind and is there very technical in sections.

If the climb up towards the top of Stromlo wasnt hard enough then Hammer Head was just around a couple of corners and ready to draw blood at any time. Nice work Timmee for giving it a crack (even though you ended up on your head with 2 stiches !!)

If you managed to make it through this section then the next 6km loop back to the start is full of twists and turns with little climbs added in to stretch the legs.

Congratulations to Chirs Jongewaard for his effort in taking out the XCO Elite men – 3 years in a row!!!!!!

How good is that, and to KOM rider Warren Burgess for his 3rd place in XCO Veteran Men – 2 years in a row now.Onya Wazza your a legend! Plus KOM rider Zoe King finishing a very strong 4th in Elite womens. Congratulations team KOM for a fantastic performance.

Joseph Sunde Memorial, Australia Day 26 January

Joseph Sunde Memorial, Australia Day 26 January

Always a favourite on the summer road calendar, unfortunately this year’s Sunde Memorial was a little light-on in both competitor and spectator depth. However this did not make for easy racing- given the prevalent Southerly to battle down the home straight, and 9 corners per lap, Heffron Park is going to challenge even the most seasoned racer.

In the B and C Grade handicap, KOM was represented admirably by Gary ‘The Unit’ Holland making his Heffron Debut in C Grade. In his usual fashion, Gary put in more than his share of work in the early laps, but ensured that he had enough in reserve to finish with the pack when B Grade came through with 2 to go.

Fresh from his recent C-grade victory from a few weeks ago, Ed Kirk showed he has stepped up to B Grade with ease, again finishing safely in the peleton, leaving it to the sprinters put eachother in jeopardy to the line.

In the A Grade event, Blair Martin managed to cover most breaks before getting into the selection of the final 6 placegetters with approx 20 minutes remaining. A self-proclaimed ‘feeble’ attack with a lap to go wasnt enough to shake the remaining 5 riders, with Blair conceding to finish in 6th when the screws were turned in the final straight. The win was taken by Robbie Cater (Panasonic) who has won 5 of the last 6 Heffron events.

West Head Race (Manly Club) Sunday 11 January

West Head Race (Manly Club) Sunday 11 January This race will go down in the KOM Annals as being momentous for one reason- Wazza Burgess road debut! A devout disciple of the fat knobbies, Wazza is heard with regular monotony to say “bl. Roadies... Soft!”

It was astride his brand new Time RXR (mmmmmm) that Wazza rolled all bar his KOM team mates Andy Crawley (1st) and Blair Martin (2nd) to claim 3rd in the A Grade event.

The day also saw Zoe King complete her nationals preparation with a solid hit out, finishing first female and mid-field in the combined B and C grade event.

  • February 8th 2009

TIME RXR 2009 FRAMESETS in store now at KOM

OK, let's be honest, we see heaps of really sweet bikes here at the KINGdom, however every now and then we see a bike that the team here at KOM all say "I must have one" and the new TIME '09 RXR ULteam is one of these bikes. It is the '73 911 RS of 911's, the Biggysmall to JayZ, the Mona to the Lisa! It looks so fast it will make your eye's bleed.....get where we are coming from?

Yes the stock market and NSW economy is in the shit, but you simply MUST do everything in your power to own one of these bikes. After inventing the TRANSLINK integrated carbon seat tube, the multi-diameter steerer and the QUICKSET headset concept, TIME distinguishes itself again with the RXR ULTEAM. Inspired by the RXR CHRONO time trial module, winner of the World TT championship in its first participation, the RXR ULTEAM symbolizes the best of TIME technology.

The new fork with multi diameter steerer guarantees strength, light weight, and stability with exceptional steering precision. The TIME-patented multi-diameter steerer, combined with an oversize lower bearing (always using TIME\’s specific bearing designs), guarantees total security with outstanding resistance to shock.
