Sydney Riders Dominate the Australian National MTB Series
Zoe King and Aiden Lefmann, both from Sydney dominated the second round of the Australian MTB Series held in Illinbah last weekend.

King grabbed the lead on the first lap of the cross country and was not seen again by her competitors until the finish almost two hours later. "It was a really tough race," admitted King, "the hills certainly did hurt."

King defeated Rosemary Barnes by just three minutes and Rowena Fry in third. Fry kept her series lead although she is equal in points with King.

In the men's cross country race, Lefmann seemed to follow a similar plan to King. An early attack gave him a clear lead into the first of six laps. He held off the charge for the entire two-hour race and won by about three minutes over Cal Britten and Shaun Lewis. Lefmann also took the series lead.

Pro Tour cycling comes to South Australia
South Australia’s own Tour Down Under will become the first ProTour cycling race outside of Europe.

President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Mr Pat McQuaid, announced the ProTour series will kick off in South Australia in January 2008 - a year earlier than we were bidding for.

In making the announcement in Stuttgart, Germany, Mr McQuaid said: “I’m very pleased with the news today from the Professional Cycling Council (UCI) that we will be bringing the Tour Down Under into the ProTour,” UCI Pesident Pat McQuaid said.

“This is a just reward for an event going into it's tenth year that gets better and better each year, increased media attention in Europe and is a testament to the sport of cycling.

“I am personally pleased as this is working toward the globalisation of the sport, because this will be the first time a ProTour event will be held outside Europe.

“The efforts in Adelaide and success of the Tour Down Under are due to the support of Mike Rann, who I've met with on several occasions, and whose enthusiasm knows no bounds.

“I look forward to being at your ProTour event next year and visiting Adelaide.”

The Tour Down Under takes place from 20 - 27 January 2008

Paolo Bettini wins back to back World Championships
Bettini rose to the challenge in Stuttgart on Sunday and defended his title. This is only the fourth time in history that this has been done. Bettini who had been surrounded by controversy leading up to the event fired an imaginary rifle as part of his victory celebrations. "So many people shot at me this week, so I wanted to do the same when I crossed the line," said Bettini in a post-race press conference. "The gun was not fired at someone in particular. If someone felt it, then, they know who they are." He further clarified, "It was directed at those outside of cycling, who makes statements and know nothing about cycling. They make their statements for economical reasons."

Bugno one the previous back to back title winners expressed his respect for Bettini saying "He is the greatest champion of his era. I don't like to make comparisons because I consider them useless, but Bettini has made history. Not only is he a great rider in the Classics. And don't forget that he won the [2004] Olympics."

KOM Five Peaks Training Ride wrap up
The KOM Five Peak (KOMFP) ride took place last Saturday in perfect conditions .

14 riders took up the challenge and covered the 145km in just under 5 hours.

The route for the course headed up the Pacific Highway from KOM, through Hornsby before tuning left off the highway through Galston Gorge (#1). The route then headed through Arcadia and down to the car ferry at Berowra Waters before climbing (#2) back up to the highway at Berowra. From there, it was straight along the highway to the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn and we continued on to the top of Mount White (#3) where we turned around and headed back up to Pie in the Sky (#4) where we refueled. From there we back tracked along the highway to the Bobbin Head turnoff at Hornsby Heights heading down through Kuringai National Park to Bobbin Head and climbing (#5) out at the North Turramurra side.

Andy Crawley got the Thor Hushovd strong man award, Alex, Blair and Wazza fought hard for KOM points, while DC, Hayden and the rest of the peleton was pretty much happy to crawl home on reserve tank. A fantastic training ride in preparation for the "Beumont road Worlds" on Monday.

KOM rider puts in an amazing effort to take out fourth place at the Grafton to Inverell Road Race
The KOM Cyclery Squadra achieved an exceptional third placing in the team's event in last weekend's 230km Grafton to Inverell Road Race. Not only was this race one of NSW's premier road events, it was also a national series race, meaning KOM riders were pitted against many of the country's top professional and Institute riders.

The team was spearheaded by Blair 'Martinez' Martin's fourth placing in the A Grade event, after some 7 hours in the saddle. After a small group of riders broke away early, Blair rolled through with 6 other riders in the chase bunch for over 140km in harsh cross winds, before attacking in the final throws into Grafton. Blair managed to hold off the other riders in a result he feels was even better than his NSW State Title. "That was even better than my NSW State Title," Blair was quoted as saying not long after the race.

Alex 'Alejandro' Malone used his experience of last year's D-Grade victory to perfection, in out-sprinting the peleton to finish 8th in the B-Grade division. His tactical nouse ensured that there were no riders in the bunch not doing their fair share in the challenging conditions. "Conditions were challenging," Alex said, "but I made sure there were no riders in the bunch not doing their fair share".

Hayden 'Big Jens' Kegg overcame dehydration, hunger and a severe lack of training to finish an astonishing 11th in B Grade. At the final feed zone Kegg admitted to wondering whether it was all worth it. "I was wondering whether it was all worth it," Kegg dileriously stated upon completion.

Northern Sydney rider Rob Hodgson donned the KOM colours for the race also, and after footing it with Martin in the bunch to Glen Innes (just past half way), suffered the effects of a less than adequate feeding arrangement to ride solo for much of the remainder. To his credit, Rob was suffering hallucinations by the closing stages, but still finished, even with a smile on his face.

Special mention must be made of former Grafton local Peter Scotton for making the trip with the boys. Peter's assistance in feeding the riders during the race was an absolute life saver. On top of that, the meal provided by his mother the night before was worth the trip alone. The Squad would have 'Scoot' fighting in their foxhole again at the drop of a hat.

Thanks again to Dave DC Cottee for the use of the KOM Wagon.

Also worthy of mention were the Magpies of both Grafton and Tamworth- suspicions are that the 'bling' that Malone and Kegg have hung on their bikes has made them fodder to angry nesting Maggies. Warning- do not ride near either of them during Magpie season for fear of unpredictable evasive bike handling.

Next race- Goulburn to Sydney.

Sam Hill Down Hill World Champion
Australian rider Sam Hill has defended his World Championship ranking with a win in Fort William, Scotland. Whilst Sam did not qualify well he went on to take out the event stating that "I like a longer course like this one because it takes me a little while to get into a rhythm, but this one was almost too long. I had quite a few little mistakes, and I didn't feel fully into my run, but I think it came down to the fittest guy who makes the fewest mistakes."
French man Fabien Barel came in second place with Gee Atherton (Great Britain) in third place.

Bipartisan Backing of Bicycle Boom
The Minister for Health and Ageing, The Hon Tony Abbott MP launched the landmark document Cycling > Moving Australia Forward at Parliament House.

Minister Abbott was joined by Shadow Minister for Sport, Recreation and Health Promotion, and Shadow Minister for Local Government, Senator Kate Lundy and former editor of The Age, Michael Smith - each highlighting the tremendous potential of cycling to address key challenges facing Australia; soaring transport emissions, up 30% since 1990, as well as obesity, rising fuel costs and traffic congestion.

Minister Abbott said "Cycling is a clean, green and healthy way to travel. At a time of rising obesity and fuel costs, there has never been a better time for Australians to get on their bikes".

Tony Abbott also used the occasion to announce that the Commonwealth Government will provide funding of $30,000 to the Cycling Promotion Fund to do a scoping study on what sort of approaches will work in getting more people to get on their bikes with the objective of getting adults engaged in physical activity.

"Today marks a turning point for cycling in Australia. Once considered a marginalised activity, cycling is now our 4th most popular physical activity for adults and 1.3 million new bicycles are sold each year, outnumbering cars for the seventh consecutive year" said Stephen Hodge, 6 time Tour de France competitor and group spokesperson.

Coinciding with the launch was the announcement of the Australian cycling sector's key asks in the lead up to the federal election. "We are calling on all political parties to support our proposal for federal funding for cycling. Promoting smarter transport choices and improved bicycle infrastructure will help Australia tackle some of its greatest challenges in the health, environment and economic sectors." says Hodge.

"Cycling is a practical, low cost and healthy way for people to lower their impact on the environment, cut their petrol costs and stay healthy. Federal support is needed to make cycling a real choice for more Australians."

The new Fox Flux Helmet is coming soon to KOM
The Fox Flux helmet is a new pursuit for the company. It's a helmet that combines the freestyle shape with cross country ventilation, taking the best from both worlds into a unique skid lid that looks good on the trails, on the ramps, in the parking lot, even riding down the street. The freestyle shape is best seen from behind, where the helmet has a familiar curve in addition to extending lower than most cross country helmets. The XC heritage is best seen up front, with the visor and big air scoops work together to help channel air flow over the head. A first for helmets is the spoiler atop the rear of the lid. Inspired by motocross, it channels the discharge air flow to keep the helmet streamlined, which means fast. 20 vents let the air come and go as it pleases. The Fox Flux helmet also uses a Detox secondary retention system. Colors are black, black camo, and stone camo. Sizes run from small-XL.

after the presentation the teams toured around the champs and both simon gerrans and cadel came ova to us and thanked us for supporting them.... at this point it was a massive pile up behind us to get a piece of cadel and in the midst of everything kristen grabbed his bike and was trying to take photos as well as grab his ass...very funny.... cadel grabbed the flag from the couple who'd been following the tour since London which i thought was awesome.... he toured around the champs and came back to us to return the flag and personally thanked everyone for supporting him, shaking most peoples hands... great day to be Australian....

its important to note that every French person we spoke to wanted cadel to win... guys there was not one discovery or csc fan in the crowd... interesting...

all in all, a very long day.... but what a day to put Australian cycling on the map.

New Oakley Radar Glasses featured at the Tour de France
Oakley’s new Radar glasses were worn by 54 riders competing in the Tour de France. Whilst the M frame was still proving to be a formidable weapon Oakley decided it was time to expand their range of elite sporting eye wear with the introduction of the Radar.

The Radar's improvements include shorter earstems for a better interface with helmet retention systems, a more secure three-point fit relative to M Frame, wider hinges for stiffer feel, and a decidedly more aggressive appearance. The new frame also boasts vented temples to combat fogging, an enhanced field-of-view and a newly integrated nosepad attachment. Among the most significant upgrades, though, is Oakley's new permanent hydrophobic lens coating that resists water, perspiration, and skin oils in an effort to keep the lenses free of distracting obstructions. The coating is also anti-static to ward off dust and debris.

Like the M Frame, the Radar is offered in multiple lens shapes to suit all rider’s preferences.

All of the Radar range is available at King of the Mountain Cyclery, for more product information please visit http://www.komcyclery.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=29_333

Tour De France Stage 17 Update
The day’s controversies did not effect the sprinting talents of Daniel Bennati who made easy work of beating Markus Fothen to the line to claim the 17th Stage of Tour de France. Bennati was part of an early break away group of eight which reduced down to four riders with 19 kilometres remaining. Markus Fothen (Gerolsteiner) placed second whilst Martin Elmiger (Ag2r Prévoyance) and Jens Voigt (Team CSC) finished in third and fourth. The recent departures from the Tour have seen a shuffle in the Grand Standings, Alberto Contador Velasco now leads the Tour with Cadel Evans only 1.53 behind and Levi Leipheimer in third place.

Cannondale Super Six heads to Australia
The design engineers at Cannondale have been at it again: Cannondale's Super Six is the all-carbon version of the System Six, and will be available in '08 (fiscal, which means we'll be seeing them this summer).

Frequently asked questions

  • Is the Super Six made in the U.S. or overseas? The Super Six is the first all-carbon Cannondale road bike made in Bedford PA.
  • How much does the Super Six weigh? Approximately 50 grams less than a System Six of the same size.
  • What will the Super Six cost? A full Dura-Ace Super Six will be $9500, compared to $8,000 for a System Six with the same group.
  • Will the Super Six replace the System Six? No. The Super Six is designed for a ride that is more compliant than a System Six, so it won't be quite as stiff. The two will compliment each other, if you want to have more than one arrow in your quiver.

New Scalpel 08 coming soon to KOM......
The new Cannondale Scalpel for 2008 has been spotted at a few of the world cup races in June. Roel Paulissen and Fredrik Kessiakoff together with the rest of the Cannondale Vredestein team have been riding these new bikes recently. The Scalpel is Cannondales light cross country race bike and it looks like it is getting redesigned for 2008. The Scalpel gets its name from the cutting edge design, light weight and precise handling that it offers.

It now looks like the bike will be sporting around 100mm of rear travel using flex chain stays and a swing link suspension. Rumours are that the bike will be tested this season and once all the angles and tweaks are confirmed they will be producing a carbon version. The rear suspension has been changed with the rear shock moving to the more common position inside the triangle and no longer at the back above the seat stays. It is also now using the swing link configuration to connect it to the top tube. The prototype bikes are using the DT carbon 190 rear shock, however the commercial model may well use the Fox RP23.

The flex chain stays are still there, eliminating the need for additional pivot points, thereby saving weight and maintaining lateral rigidity. The older scalpels only had a small amount of travel that worked well with the flexible carbon chain stays. With the possibility of more travel now it will be interesting to see how this whole setup works.

We are now taking orders for our first shipment due mid October, prices range from mid $4k to stellar!

To place your order or to find out more information please email us at lainie@komcyclery.com.au

2008 Hayes Stroker Brake adopts radial design
Stroker is the first radial master cylinder that can be installed on either side of the handlebar. The Stroker is compact, efficient and extremely rigid, resulting in light and intuitive braking. New Lever Blade Design - An extension of your hand, Stroker’s lever "just feels right". Contact points are optimized to hold the rider’s fingers in place through the stroke of the brake.

Indexing Adjuster Dial - Tool-free dial with positive clicks to set your ideal lever reach. Integrated reservoir - Stroker’s one of a kind integrated reservoir controls brake fluid expansion on long and high speed descents. New Caliper - Hayes’ largest brake pads to date result in optimal heat management and deliver loads of power.

Stroker brings 10 years of hydraulic disc brake experience to all riders in the form of a high powered, visually stunning platform that shade tree mechanics can understand and afford.

High performance motorcycles rely on radial design master cylinders to put efficient, consistent braking power into rider's hands. So should bicycles. The time is now, the technology is right, and the Stroker's advanced and intuitive design is the answer. Featuring the first radial master cylinder that can be run on either side of the handle bar, the Stroker also offers a two-piece clamp system that allows riders to switch from conventional brake setup to moto-style in seconds. Its smart design means that riders can remove the brakes from the handle bar without having to detach the grips, shifters and other controls.

But the Stroker offers more than convenience. The radial design minimizes pushrod and piston side loading for better durability while providing a super light and responsive lever feel. Because the brake’s internals are designed to move in the same direction as your braking hand, every lever stroke is the ultimate in efficiency. That efficiency translates into powerful control at the flick of a finger. The extreme rigidity of the radial body and the high mechanical advantage of the radial master cylinder also ensure that maximum power is transferred from your fingers to the pads and rotor, yielding a superior ratio of minimal braking effort to maximum power output.

Three port-timing holes are also used in the master cylinder to make sure the brake fluid always takes the path of least resistance, making the lever feel consistently responsive and smooth. Matching the smoothness of its braking execution is the Stroker’s streamline aesthetic design, with an optimized hose exit angle at the master cylinder for a clean-looking cockpit. Maintaining the Stroker can be nearly as clean and efficient as its operation with the new Pro Bleed kit and Stroker threaded fitting.

Friction equals stopping power. To provide that superior power, the Stroker Trail and Ryde brakes utilize large pads made up of proprietary materials with better heat capabilities that provide more power and longer wear time. Stroker Trail also uses the improved Hayes™ patented tool-free pad-change technology with large grab tabs for easy replacement.

The caliper is the business end of the brake system, clamping down on the rotor to stop the spinning wheel. The Stroker’s insulated caliper pistons control fluid temperature during heavy braking, so every braking stroke engages the caliper smoothly and consistently, eliminating lever fluctuation and providing a reliable feel.

Set up is simple with Hayes™ standard 74mm post mount, which is used on all calipers and can be matched with the 5, 6, 7 ,8 or 9 inch rotors to meet your riding needs. The Stroker Trail caliper has adjustable hose routing to set the ideal hose exit angles on any bike. Another advanced design feature, the Caliper Positioning Window (CPW) promotes air flow needed to cool the caliper, eliminating the need for fan blades on the rotor. The CPW also provides a clear view of the rotor and brake pads, making set up and adjustments a snap, so more time is spent riding.

Every gram of the Stroker is optimized for strength, efficiency, and performance. The calipers are designed to add more aluminum where you need it to manage heat transferred from the brake pads, while eliminating weight where you don’t need it. It just makes sense.

Tour De France Stage 15 Update
Alexander Vinokourov showed why he was the man tipped to take out the Tour de France in Stage 15. Whilst that dream is not going to happen for him this year he still claimed his second stage win of the 2007 Tour. Vinokourov took the lead 3.5 kilometres from the top of Col de Peyresourde with 15 kilometres remaining to the finish. Kim Kirchen from T-Mobile Team took out second place with Haimar Zubeldia finishing in third. Michael Rasmussen continues to wear the yellow jersey with Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans trailing closely in second and third place. Stage 16 of the Tour will see the riders taking on 4 difficult climbs and the competition for the GC standing heat up. Stage 16 sees the riders race from Orthez Gourette to Col d'Aubisque a distance of 218,5 km.

Tour De France Stage 9 Update
The 24 year-old Colombian Mauricio Soler took out the 9th stage of the Tour De France with a 38 second lead over Alejandro Valverde Belmonte with Cadel Evans coming in third place. It was Soler’s first time racing the Tour De France and summed up his experience as “a dream, it is the best thing in my life." Unfortunately for Alexander Vinokourov this race was far from a dream. With injuries from his fall still hampering his riding he crossed the line in 3'24" (2'46" behind Valverde)which effectively ended his campaign for the yellow jersey. Michael Rasmussen from Team Rabobank continues to wear the yellow jersey.

The 9th stage will see the riders race from Val d'Isère to Briançon (159.5km). This is a particularly grueling stage with three climbs, the first being Col de l'Iseran: 15 kilometres climb @ 6 % grade / Beyond Category, the second climb is Col du Telegraphe 12 kilometre climb @ 6.7 % grade / 1st Cat and the final is Col du Galibier 17.5 kilometre climb @ 6.9 % grade / Beyond Category. Trail Maintenance news and events in July

Other News from Terracare

We are still talking with Munda Biddi Trail Management about starting up trail care days in WA and we are looking for other trails in the WA area that need help from our volunteers. Drop us a email if you have some thoughts on this.

Lysterfield in VIC are continuing to develop their long term trail care plan and we are standing by for projects and dates.

We are looking forward to being able to add some QLD dates to the Terracare calendar and offer you guys a great excuse for a holiday up north. More news on this as it comes.

A big thanks to the local bike shops who, last month, put a real effort into letting the community know that trail care is alive and kicking. We are welcoming shops from all over the country every week.

We love hearing advocacy success stories and here is one we got wind of this month. It seems there has been a win in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney. A small team has been working with the land managers of the historic Six Foot Track, for many decades these managers have been reluctant to accommodate mtb traffic on the single track sections. The mtb representatives have secured legal access to the trail from the local train station, Blackheath. This will make it a far more accessible area for all riders and a more diverse ride. The new areas will be sign posted and broadcast to the mtb community before the end of the year.

Congratulations fellas!

Wild Card for Team Barloworld in Tour De France

JOHANNESBURG – South African-sponsored professional cycling outfit, Team Barloworld, today received and accepted their wildcard invitation to ride the most prestigious cycle race in the world, the Tour de France, in July 2007.

Entry into the Tour de France is extended by invitation only to the best of the world’s professional cycling teams. Team Barloworld have had a phenomenal start to the 2007 cycling season, and are leading the 66-team UCI Professional Continental rankings.

“Team Barloworld’s success in being invited to compete in the Tour de France is thanks to both a great team effort as well as representation from Claudio Corti, the highly respected Italian Team Manager,” said Chris Fisher, Head of Corporate Marketing, Barloworld.

“When Barloworld first began sponsoring the team five years ago, their stated aim was to have a South-African sponsored team in the Tour de France. We will finally achieve this objective. Corti has worked tirelessly for over a year to get us into this race,” continued Fisher.

“The team’s success has been due to their exact application of the Barloworld brand personality and values, namely being professional, competitive, passionate, honest, diverse and doing everything we do with the greatest degree of integrity.”

Claudio Corti, the Team Manager of Team Barloworld says: “The UCI have recognized these qualities and now granted us just reward for years of hard work.”

“Barloworld and Team Barloworld’s brand philosophy is the same – a combination of teamwork and individual excellence. This is what has been the core of the team’s success right from the beginning. We contract with riders that put the team first,” said Corti.

Team Barloworld’s next challenge is going to be the selection of the riders within the team to compete in the Tour de France. Form riders thus far this season are Robert Hunter (Rsa), Alexander Efimkin (Rus), Felix Cardenas (Col), Geraint Thomas (Gbr) and John-Lee Augustyn (Rsa). Nine riders will be selected purely on merit.

“Our Tour de France objective now shifts to achieving a podium finish in a stage of the Tour de France,” said Fisher.

Introducing the 2008 Shimano Deore XT

2008 Shimano Deore XT represents a component set designed to take on the challenges dished out by modern day mountain bike riders on aggressive terrain. With several new products and plenty of options you’ll see why the new XT delivers the choices and products you seek.
Keep reading to get a sneak preview at the new Shimano Deore XT range.

Shimano Shadow Derailleur
Like the latest XTR, options are the emphasis of the new Deore XT. The debut of the Shimano Shadow RD yields a third rear derailleur option, joining the Top-Normal and Low-Normal versions.

A Shadow RD places priority on a low profile design and less body movement for those enthusiasts that are most at home on extreme technical trails.

The new Deore XT Shadow Rear Derailleur features:

  • Top-Normal spring design (The Original) to mesh with the more common choice of RapidFire shifters for trail and all-mountain riding
  • In high gear, the derailleur has a profile that is a full 15mm less than a traditional rear derailleur. That means it barely protrudes more than the quick release skewer nut.
  • Direct cable routing reduces the chance of the cable snagging on roots and rocks.
  • Stronger spring keeps the derailleur body more stable in rough terrainand yields firm, crisp shifting feel.
  • Redesigned bracket axle keeps the derailleur body from smacking against the chainstay.
  • Available in medium and long cage
  • 235g
Servo-Wave: Exclusive Feature of the New Deore XT Disc Brake Systems
The new Servo-Wave equipped Deore XT disc brake levers provide both clearance & power. Available in Dual Control Levers or individual brake levers, this feature provides plenty of pad clearance while delivering substantial power. Combined with the new, stiffer, mono-body XT caliper an additional 20% more power is on tap.
Ergonomic tuning has also been enhanced with another XT exclusive: brake levers that have adjustable lever free-stroke as well as adjustable reach, resulting in a system that can be tuned to each individual’s anatomy and preferences.

Servo Wave Hydraulic Disc Brake Lever
  • Servo Wave mechanism creates quicker brake engagement without reducing brake pad clearance at the caliper – this feature is unique to new Deore XT!
  • 20% more stopping power when used with the new mono-body XT caliper
  • Adjustable reach & adjustable free-stroke –- a Deore XT exclusive
  • Ergonomic lever design
  • No hassle cable routing
  • 128g/pr
High Power Hydraulic Disc Brake
  • Mono-body caliper for lightweight and rigidity
  • New rotor designs in 160, 180, and 203mm sizes
  • High Power: 20% more stopping power when used with the new XT ST-M775 Dual Control Levers or BL-M775 Disc Brake Levers
  • Compatible with all current hardware and pads
  • 224g/pr (calipers only) or 316g/wheel (160mm caliper, adaptor, hose & rotor)
Shimano Deore XT Dual Control Shift Levers

Liquigas, CSC and Astana team riders take out 1st,2nd and 3rd place at the 90th Giro ‘d’ Italia
In an impressive display of talent and determination Danilo Di Luca of Team Liquigas took out the overall title for the 90th Giro ‘d’ Italia. Following closely in second place was Andy Schleck from Team CSC with Eddy Mazzoleni from Team Astana following in third place. Keep reading to find out more about the machines that led these champions to victory.

Danilo Di Luca's choice of weapon is the Liquigas Cannondale System Six

Danilo Di Luca is currently using a fully stock 50cm Cannondale System Six frameset which Cannondale introduced just last year. In contrast to typical convention, the System uses a monocoque carbon fiber front triangle coupled to rear stays made entirely of 6000-series aluminum. The Liquigas Cannondale System Six is currently available at King of the Mountain Cyclery.
For information on the Cannondale Liquigas System Six please email us at lainie@komcyclery.com.au

Andy Schleck rode to second place on a Cervelo Soloist.

The Cervelo Soloist has been designed to be extremely aerodynamic whilst also being among the lightest frames in the ProTour and with excellent stiffness & compliance properties. The Cervelo Soloist is currently available at King of the Mountain Cyclery.

Astana BMC Pro Machine carried Eddy Mazzoleni to third place

The Pro Machine is one of the most impressive bikes around. It's possibly the most artfully sculpted carbon bike we've ever seen. The whole bike is carbon -- dropouts, headset cups and seat collar. BMC worked with Easton to utilize their CNT nanotechnology carbon manufacturing techniques. Nanotechnology specifically addresses the fact that the weak link in carbon fiber frames isn't the carbon itself. It's the resin matrix that has potential vulnerabilities. CNT is short for "Carbon Nanotubes", and it's the process of adding microscopically small carbon tubes to the resin to give it entirely new material properties. CNT nanotechnology strengthens the resin matrix so that BMC deems the Pro Machine "the safest, most durable carbon bike on the market."

There was only a limited number of Astana Team frames brought into Australia so don’t miss out on this opportunity to ride like the professionals.

KOM Rider Zoe King's Race Report - MTB World Cup XC # 2 Offenburg, Germany
Definately had the pre-race nerves but was also really excited. There were so many people. All the big bike brands and bike teams had massive trucks and tents set up with full technical support. Seeing all the worlds best riders was an amazing experience. They were expecting 20,000 spectators (few less if it rains). There was even a grandstand at the start/finish area, as well as mini grandstands at each of the technical drops on the course. I had decided against using mud tyres but it was starting to look like rain.

Did my warm up and was then called up to starting pens - we were crammed in like sheep until race number was called. There were 121 female riders. We had to do 2 start loops and 6 laps of 5.5k course. Quite a short lap so the chance of getting lapped by the top riders was pretty high. I was about middway on starting grid, so not a bad position to start. The gun went off and chaos commenced. Elbows were out and the fight began. Tried to maintain my position but kept getting cut off. Was a whole new experience.

The 2 start loops spread the field out but I still got stuck behind some less technically competent girls once I hit the single track. Couldnt believe some would almost come to a stop at the top of the drops. I had to do some dodgy overtaking on the gnarly descents but it was kind of fun. Didnt really know how I was going, just tried to stay steady and not blow up as I didnt want to get too fatigued and crash on the drops.

The crowds were pretty loud at each of the drops and would cheer if you did it well. They would also encourage you up the climbs. Soon after the race started, the rain started bucketing down and the course got really slippery and muddy. Again a very new experience. I managed to ride everything and didnt have to walk any sections.

The officials pull you off the course if you are 80% behind the lead rider so you dont get lapped. Unfortunately I got pulled. I ended up finishing in 74th position out of 120. Dellys was 41st, Tory 48th, Jo 87th. In the mens, Chris was 19th, Sid 28th?, all the U23 boys also got pulled, not sure of finish position.

I really enjoyed the race, the mud and the atmosphere. After finishing, I got called up for random drug testing! Had to stand around in the freezing cold, drinking lots of water until i could pee...

We watched the Elite Mens race which ended up being even muddier than ours. Most of the guys had to run or bum slide down the drops as it was too slippery. It was great fun watching. On the driveback to Italy, going through Switzerland it started to snow! Only a few days ago it was 30degrees...

We are now back training in Italy for about a week before heading to Switzerland for the next world cup. The girls are getting a bit tired of sleezy Italian men, while out training they would be riding in the opposite direction then turn round to ride next to the girls and start conversation. The girls (luckily on their mountain bikes( resorted to hitting every pot hole and could hear the guys bikes clatter. Eventually they got the hint!

    Hope you are all well!

Sydney Metropolitan Road Champs – Penrith Sat 26th May
The Team KOM ‘old boys’ Dave ‘Levers’ Evans & Andrew ‘Eastie’ East headed out to Penrith for the Sydney Metropolitan Road Champs to contest the Masters 2 race over 90km (18 laps) around the pancake flat rowing course.

Levers showed his commitment to the team by boarding a 6.15 flight from Melbourne on the morning of the race & getting himself onto the line for the 9.25am start. The line was made with seconds to spare & a borrowed front wheel from Eastie!

The KOM duo were constantly at or near the front with Eastie making the longest break of the day staying away for just over 10k (2 laps). The race was always going to come down to a sprint and given our sprinting prowess or lack there of, we were a bit concerned that all our work would amount to zero!

As it turned out, Levers lead out the bunch from about 800m out peeling off with about 300m to go to leave Eastie to battle it out to the line. In a great result for a rider more suited to the close by Blue Mountains, Eastie managed to get up for a well earnt second place.

Young Gun Chris Williams also lined up in the afternoon race and managed to mix it up with the big boys over the 100k (20lpas) to finish well in 4th place & gained some great experience.

    Wazza's World Adventures Update Two
Hi all, Tue - had fantastic day riding some awesome MTB trails in Italy. Went with the U23 AIS/SA.com boys who knew the tracks. Started with a nice steady 45min climb up firetrail. Ouch! Then some wicked descent - knee deep in leaves - like skiing but out of control. Then bit more climbing and some more sweet single track. Very foresty like the UK but dry! Feel like i'm on the set of robin hood. Ended up ascending 1300m over 4hrs of riding. Was pretty knackered trying to keep up with the young guns.

Wed - we left for Germany - bout 7hr drive. Drive was mostly through switzerland - beautiful alps and lakes, cute houses, and Milka cows with bells. Staying in Durbach, near offenburg in Germany. Nice little wine and farming village. Really nice house with family that makes schnapps. Wish i wasnt racing as the wine & german beer houses look amazing.

Thur - we went and did some practice laps on the World Cup course. Wow, some serious mud and some serious steep drops. Very different to anything back home. Quite challenging but lots of fun. Saw Guun Rita Dahl riding - she made the drops look soo easy. Saw some chinese riders who seemed to be struggling with the tecnical bits though.

Race is on sunday. Lots of massive tents & even a grandstand. should be exciting!

    Hope all is well, Zoe

    Wazza's World Adventures Update One
    Ciao!

Hope you are all well. Enjoying Italy and the lifestyle. Wish I could speak Italian though! Arrived thur, built bikes, went for cruisy spin. Traffic was a bit daunting at first esp remembering to stay on right side of road... But while lots of cars, they are really good at giving you lots of room and seem very considerate, not like in Aus. Had a few people say some things from the car window, we think they are calling us beautiful girls, and not yelling abuse, but as we cant understand Italian we cant be sure...

On Sat, had our first race was in Val d'Arda, few hour drive south. Glad Waz is doing the driving - on autobahn speed limit of 130kh and had cars passing us. The race was an Italian national round - not a world cup race. A lot more atmosphere and commotion at the races than in Aus - all the riders seemed to be in MTB teams with matching kit. Course was fast, not very technical, short steep climbs. Had a shocker of a race - combined affects of jet lag and overdoing it with the buffet breakfast. Got a bit carried away at the start too and blew up early. Good to shake the cobwebs though and a learning experience! Will do more detailed race wrap up when have more time to write. Few people waiting to use this computer, which is very slow. Day after race we did a great 4hr ride - found a 30min climb -going up about 700m. Well the descent was fun anyway. Today is recovery day so just taking it easy, coffees and gelatos. Coffee is sooo good here.

    Take care Zoe

Regional Trail Strategy for Manly Warringah
Warringah Council is seeking comment on its Draft Warringah Regional Multiple-Use Trails Strategy. The Strategy, developed in conjunction with neighbouring councils, the NPWS, and the NSW Department of Lands, is based on existing management trails so that a regional asset can be delivered effectively, and will guide future priorities for development of regional trails in northern Sydney.

You might disagree with individual bits of the strategy (or its priorities), but by far it is potentially a really positive outcome for cyclists. There is mention of more focused MTB trails development in the strategy, so it is important we work with council on the Multi-user Trails Strategy first. If you have any particular comments, make sure the MTB clubs and Terracare know about it so that they can co-ordinate the overall cycling communities response better.

Letters need to be sent early this week to get to council by next Monday (28th) when the comments period closes. Hard copy submissions, physically signed with a pen and in an envelope are best by far. Emails are too easy to send off and aren't regarded as highly by decision makers. A real letter shows you really care.

If you are unsure as to what to write there is a prepared example for you to use and modify as you chose. The text is fairly generic and can be adapted as needed (it is good to add your own comments as long as they are fairly positive!) Letters should be signed with name and a basic address (even just a street name and suburb) or phone number to show that the person is real - Council is not going to add you to telemarketers/spamer lists!

    Postal Address is:
    General Manager
    Warringah Council,
    725 Pittwater Road
    Dee Why NSW 2099

The next step is for the council to finalise and approve it, and then to start building, upgrading and opening up the trails in the strategy.

For more information on the strategy please visit the Council's website at http://www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/wcadmin/Portals//0/Module366_Item37/Published/2007041064%20Att.pdf

    KOM Dirt Works Team Report
The Dirt Works 100km Classic took place on the 6th of May at St Albans. The final results are now available from the events website http://www.maxadventure.com.au/dirtworksclassic/
Keep reading to find out how the KOM team performed on the day

In a truly epic Dirt Works 100km MTB race at St Albans west of Sydney Team KOM demonstrated what can only be described as tenacity. The comedy of errors began early, even before the event began when HQ received an urgent plea from Blair after our team pharmacist Andy Mooreplease did some tidy carpentry on the lefty fork on Blair's Canno, requiring Zoe to remove and install the fork like a scene from Apollo 13, with Wazza guiding Zoe in the Jedi art of Lefty fork removal in the dark with a 5 and 6mm Allen key....

Sunday morning with Blair and Andy backing up from a successful Tour of Canberra road race (see details below) the boys were in fine form, if not a little tired and by the 30km point Andy got bored with the "lack of competition" (that's code for just wanted to have a good time) and dropped back to ride with the rest of us mere mortals while Blair smashed it up in top 5 position. For the next 50km DC and Andy had a blast competing for the "loosest line" and "big air" title..(Andy succumbing to defeat from DC flying "Air Rocky" )

At the 50km water stop the boys were joined by our good friend Matty A from team Millie and after DC took a quick swim in the Hawksbury river Andy, DC and Matty saw Zoe enjoying the view at the 75km mark with her crankset in pieces and with some quick thinking Zoe was back on the road with Andy on her tail wielding the whip (eventually finishing an amazing 3rd in the Women's elite category) while DC was left with a train wreck of a drive chain and only the granny ring ,grit and determination to get him home. Approx.10km from the finish, DC caught up with Blair pushing his bike minus a chain and in true epic KOM fashion DC towed Blair back to the finish.

Gongrats to the overall winner Craig Gordon who finished in 4:10 and our other KOM riders, Dave the Roman who finished in 5:50 with Marty P in 5:41, Craigy G (the man with the best bike handling skills in Australia) in 5:35, Andy Mooreplease in 6:43, Tony Mr Fixit in 5:43 and MK (biggest ticker in Australia).......... 16hours 9mins!! Awesome.

Canberra Tour 2007 KOM Team Report
The weekend of the 27th–29th April saw Team KOM head down to the nation’s capital for the 24th Annual Canberra Tour. With a crack squad that had the perfect mix of youth and experience (young blokes who know nothing & old blokes who knew it all!) the team which comprised Blair ‘BM’ Martin, Andrew ‘Eastie’ East, Dave ‘Levers’ Evans, Alex ‘Russian’ Malone, Hayden ‘Tap’ Kegg and Andy ‘Suicide’ Crawley packed the bikes on the Thule racks and left the perfect Sydney sunshine for a weekend of rain & cold!

Race day dawned ‘ugly’. Instead of the normal spin out to the race start, the inclement weather meant that the bikes were thrown on the roof, the kit bag packed with enough warm gear for a week and we drove the short trip out to Stromlo Forest Park.

The team cars cranked up the heat (KOM warm up) as we prepared our bodies for what was to come. The sight of 6 grown men getting out of a car with all its windows fogged up, clad from head to toe in lycra would have looked extremely odd to say the least at almost any other place on the planet, but not here and not today! The pre race conversation was now less about tactics and more about should we or shouldn’t we wear arm warmers and a vest – both items were given the unanimous thumbs up and so the team rolled out looking ‘wet’ but still splendid in the team colours.

Seventy or so riders toed the line in the B grade field. The attacks started from the gun with KOM Team tactics dictating that we should have a rider in all breaks and for the early breaks Andy ‘Suicide’ Crawley took on the massive responsibility of flying the KOM banner. Suicide and several other riders headed up the road to claim the early KOM points. It wasn't long though until the peleton started to show its strength reeling in the last of the break with the final climb to go. The KOM boys moved to the front with several attempts made to drop the bunch but it wasn’t to be with fresh legs keeping the group together for a bunch sprint. Dave ‘Levers’ Evans lead out on the final incline with about 500m to go with a line of KOM boys behind. Unfortunately, we are not known for our sprinting prowess and ended up finishing 4th Eastie, 5th BM, 6th Levers and 9th Russian all in the same time as the winner. Suicide trailed in a minute or so later having paid the price for his early aggression. Hayden ‘Tap’ Kegg was the hard luck story of the stage puncturing in the middle stages and then having to solo home in torrential rain several minutes down.

The boys were buoyed by a solid first stage & knew that the tough first stage would have softened up a few legs by the afternoon. The afternoon stage saw a slight improvement in the weather with the rain at least easing back and only coming through in intermittent showers. The stage again had Suicide doing his thing off the front for the first third of the race before BM showed how hills should be ridden. Heading out of Uriarra Crossing approaching the end of the first lap, BM had gapped the bunch chasing down the last of the early aggressors. He was soon joined by a group of 4 which included the brains behind the KOM tilt, Levers!! They soon put what would turn out to be a winning gap between themselves and the peleton power through the 2nd lap. Well, four of them powered through the 2nd lap. Unfortunately, Levers was dropped up Mt McDonald from the escape group and was forced to struggle in with his ‘good mate’ Suicide. It was only later that the truth was revealed with Suicide ably assisting both Levers & Tap up a hill or two but only Tap receiving the bonus digit to the date – a feeling Tap will never forget!

BM went onto to finish 4th in the stage moving into 3rd overall and putting almost 3 minutes into the main bunch. Mr Consistency Eastie finished 6th, Russian 11th, Tap 32nd, Levers and Suicide ‘together’ in 34th and 36th.

Looking back at day one, Team KOM did everything they needed to do to set up day two. BM about 30 seconds off the lead and Eastie and Russian hovering not far down in GC. A good hot shower, a good feed at the local Italian, a bottle of Red and then off for an early night.

Day 2 dawned only slightly better than day 1. None of us knew what the day would hold although events of the following few hours would leave an indelible print on Team KOM, the race as a whole and all cyclists who enjoy competing.

Team KOM had discussed tactics to the enth degree but as we all know, unforeseen events and circumstances can change a race in an instant. We rolled out from Stromlo for 125km just on 10am with Suicide doing what he does best and taking it out from the gun. He was joined by 6 or 7 others keen to try to TTT themselves up to the business end of the GC standings. About 10 minutes later we came upon every cyclist nightmare, an accident involving a bunch and an oncoming vehicle. I’ll spare you all the detail but suffice to say that several girls in the B grade field were seriously injured in an accident on the fast decent down Cotter road. Our thoughts are with the injured cyclists and their families.

The race continued after the stop with the breakaway group of 7 or so riders being given a 30 second start. They put their heads down and the gap grew steadily to the main bunch which was upwards of 5 minutes behind. With Suicide in the break, team KOM took it fairly steady trying to tap out a steady tempo but not do all the work. After all BM was still only in 3rd place and reserves would be needed towards the end with two grueling climbs up Mt McDonald and Uriarra.

At the turn around with still approximately 70km to go the break still held a comfortable 5 minutes. Russian, Levers, Tap & Eastie moved into chase mode and took turns of driving the bunch for the next 30km of undulating terrain. BM was nicely nestled in about 10th wheel for most of the stage to date. Suicide was back with the bunch just after the feed zone having punctured earlier and using all his reserves to rejoin the break. It was now that the KOM brains trust (Levers & Eastie!) did their calculations and realised that if the break wasn’t at least reduced significantly, the podium would be filled by the break riders. The leader of the race suffered an unfortunate puncture at the wrong time and was never able to rejoin the main group. That left BM in 2nd place, that is if the break could be reduced. Team KOM stormed over Mt McDonald with Eastie pouring on the gas in the early stages of the climb before Mr GC, BM tore the legs off those stupid enough to think they could stay with him.

BM did actually have three other ‘stupid’ riders cling to his wheel as they crested the summit with the remaining peleton about 5-10 seconds down. Unfortunately, one of those riders to hang onto BM was the man in 2nd place overall on GC. After a brief discussion of tactics between Eastie & Levers as we came off Mt MacDonald, it was decided that while BM still had the 2nd placed GC rider with him, we should try and bridge the gap to assist him to get as close to the original escapes as possible. As it turned out, BM and another rider were able to get away up Uriarra and pick up enough time to ensure a nail biting finish to the general classification. For the record, stage 3 had the break away remnants of 4 riders finish only 1 minute up on BM (5th) and his hill climbing partner with the bunch another 1 minute 15 back. All remaining Team KOM riders apart from Suicide were together in the bunch at the end. It must be noted that if there was an award for most aggressive rider, Andy ‘Suicide’ Crawley had that award safely in the bag.

The team gathered near the finish line with team photos taken (Thanks to Mrs Williams) and tried to do our best to calculate the margin of victory, so we hoped! As it turned out Blair ‘BM’ Martin won the Canberra Tour with a total time of 7 hours, 39 minutes and 50 seconds, 1 minute 15 seconds ahead of the 2nd placed rider. Andrew ‘Eastie’ East finished 8th, Alex ‘Russian’ Malone 13th, Dave ‘Levers’ Evans 25th, Hayden ‘Tap’ Kegg 28th and we can never leave out Andy ‘Suicide’ Crawley in 36th.

Not only did the team take the overall honours with BM but also the team honours as well ahead of Southern Highlands. BM was 2nd in the KOM with Suicide in 4th. A special mention must to go Heather who raced brilliantly until their race was abandoned, Jo (Eastie’s better half) for feeding us on Sunday and putting up with more BS than any non rider should have to put up with on a weekend away and finally last but definitely not least, Chris Williams (& his mum) for a fantastic debut ride in D grade finishing 10th in GC.

    Breaking News
The driving force behind KOM and without doubt one of Australia's toughest cyclists Wazza (aka) Warren Burgess has been involved in a freak accident 8:00am Friday morning at Manly Sydney. Wazza rode over a "u-bolt" or "shackle bolt" similar to those used to secure the safety chain on trailers with a 23mm diameter (the exact same diameter as most 700c road wheels) which amazingly wedged itself over the wheel and rim then immediately locking up the front wheel once the bolt reached the front fork sending Wazz face first onto the deck. Wazza spent the weekend relaxing under a morphine blanket as a guest of the Royal North Shore Hospital and from all the team at KOM we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in the saddle soon...we all ready miss you mate! The cyclist will ride 1,100km from Brisbane to Sydney at the end of May '07 to help fight cancer.

The Tour De Cure is an annual event that aims to enroll a group of every day people to cycle from one Australian capital city to another to raise money for vital Australian charities that conduct research into serious health conditions, or support people suffering from those conditions.

From 2007 to 2010, the Tour de Cure will be targeting Cancer. The inaugural Tour De Cure will take place on May 28th, 2007, when 23 cyclists will hit the road from Brisbane to Sydney, proudly supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Camp Quality.

The Tour De Cure aims to raise $300,000 in 2007 to be split between these charities, with a view to raising at least $2 million by its fourth year.

The men and women riding in the Tour De Cure are putting their bodies on the line over nine grueling cycling days, so that they can join the fight against our nation’s biggest killer.

But you can join the fight without pedaling a single kilometer! Get on the road to finding a cure by making a donation. Every dollar counts. http://www.tourdecure.com.au/select.html

Ceramic=Speed! Get more from your bike and update ith the latest ceramic technology from KOM:
The benefits of using ceramic products are endless so we have added just a few for you:

    • Very low friction. The friction in a typical bearing with silicon nitride balls and steel rings is about 10 % less than in an all steel configuration.
    • Increased stiffness. Higher stiffness from the silicon nitride balls will increase stiffness in the bottom bracket and hubs.
    • Extremely wear resistant because of the hardness. The ceramic material is much harder than the hardest of bearing steels.
    • Weight reduction. Silicon nitride is 60% lighter than steel. This gives less material to accelerate when the speed changes and thus results in a quicker response of the bicycle.
    • Safe operation even when using low amounts lubricant. This gives greater possibility to reduce the friction coming from lubricant viscous drag.
    • Tolerant to dirt and dust. Although bearings work best in clean environments the ceramic balls help the bearing to survive also under less pure conditions. Together with special seals and lubrication the friction in ceramic bearings can be some 20-30 times lower than steel bearings with standard friction seals and standard lubrication.

105th Paris-Roubaix - PT France, April 15, 2007- Aussie Stuart O'Grady wins the worlds toughest classic race.

    Aggressive O'Grady conquers Hell

Stuart O'Grady nailed the big one on Sunday, the Queen of Classics: Paris-Roubaix. The straight-talking, likable Australian punched the accelerator with 23 kilometres to go to scribe his name in Roubaix's history book.

"What I have learned over the years is that to win a Classic, or the big races, is that it is no fluke or luck, you have to be aggressive and you have to want it," he added. "No one wanted a win more than me yesterday; no one." Stuey won riding a Cervelo R3 and is the second year in a row for Cervelo to be on the Paris-Roubaix podium.

The entire Cervelo range including the the new super light R3 SL and Carbon Soloist SL are available at KOM cyclery.

Northern Sydney Cycling Club launches their Women Specific Group Rides
Cycle racing is a male dominated sport and although this provides some great eye candy for us girls, it can be daunting for many of us to get involved and try it. NSCC is a friendly club who are keen to give women advice and resources about road cycling, covering everything from riding in bunches, racing and women specific bike fit.

We want more women to get involved - cycling keeps you fit, it’s social and most importantly our training rides tend to end at the coffee shop!

NSCC has women members from beginners to experienced road cycling competitors. For specific questions on getting started or more information regarding women in the club contact Kim on women@northernsydneycyclingclub.org.au

NSCC’s regular women's rides are a great opportunity to meet other women cyclists and learn or practice your bunch riding skills and etiquette in a social and supportive environment.

The 2007 Polaris Challenge takes place on 10 and 11 March 2007.
The Polaris is a two-day overnight event combining mountain biking with navigation, bush skills and touring.
Teams of two ride between checkpoints scattered over a large area of rugged country. Each checkpoint has a score and the aim is to accumulate as many points as possible within each day's time limit.
Distant and hard to access checkpoints carry higher scores and there are tough penalties for exceeding the time limits.
Each team must carry sufficient food and equipment for the weekend including an overnight camp on Saturday. The Polaris Challenge is an opportunity for a great weekend riding through some wild country on trails and tracks.
If you are up for the challenge and want to be a part of a fantastic weekend of amazing MTB riding click here for an entry form.

The Green Machine is Coming !!!
    CANNONDALE'S TEAM LIQUIGAS
There will be a familiar face at the front of the ProTour peloton in 2007… the same "C" logo that graced the head tubes of three winners of the Giro d'Italia and history's most prolific sprinter will now adorn the bikes of the Liquigas Pro Cycling Team.
Team Liquigas features an impressive cast of riders as they head into 2007. Inaugural ProTour overall winner Danilo Di Luca returns aboard a Cannondale with the spring classics and the Giro d'Italia as his main objectives. Di Luca capped his 2006 season off with an impressive win at the Vuelta d'Espana. Newcomer Filippo Pozzato sets out with the immediate goal of defending his Milan-San Remo title. Pippo joins many of his past teammates at Liquigas, like sprinter Francesco Chicchi and the American-registered Guido Trenti, and places a certain amount of team leadership on his shoulders for the classics and stage victories in the major tours. Former Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt has his sights set on the cobbled classics. We are eager to soon see the Swedish giant again at the front of the toughest one day races.
